ClearType-Fonts und Word 2007 zum Download

Microsoft released a public "beta 2" version of Office 2007 (http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview ... fault.mspx ). It's a free 450 MB download for all Windows users and will run until February 2007 (requires a free activation).

The Office 2007 package includes all the ClearType Collection fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Candara, Consolas, Constantia, Corbel), as well as the infamous Segoe UI, Microsoft's new user interface font. All the fonts include Latin, Cyrillic and Greek characters with advanced typographic OpenType features, some include characters from additional scripts.This gives us an opportunity to take a look at the "Microsoft way" of doing things with simple-scripts OpenType. The fonts are of course OpenType TT, not OpenType PS.

Unfortunately, neither Word nor PowerPoint 2007 seem to be actually using any of the user-controlled OpenType features included in these fonts (such as smcp, onum, ss01, hist , dlig, swsh etc.). For example, "small caps" in Word 2007 still produces fake small caps. I guess this means that we won't see support for user-controlled OpenType Layout features in Office within the next four-five years or so, which is a pity.

One thing worth noticing is that Word includes a fully revamped mathematical typesetting engine based on Unicode and MathML. One of the fonts that come with Office 2007, Cambria Math, has a large character set that includes many Unicode mathematical characters. Murray Sargent has written an interesting paper about it that is typeset in Word 2007 using Cambria (http://www.unicode.org/notes/tn28/UTN28 ... xtMath.pdf ).

Cambria Math includes a table named "MATH" and several unregistered OpenType feature tags such as "flac", "ssty" and "dtls". I wonder when we can expect some specifications for those tables/features published?

Dann habe ich die Schriften heute zufällig "erstanden":

In der aktuellen c't ist die Office 2007-Beta dabei. Vielleicht doch ein Grund, die CD auszupacken und nicht unbesehen umweltgerecht vom Papier zu trennen und zu entsorgen...

und? Hast du in die CD-ROM mal rein geschaut? Sind die Schriften wirklich drauf? Lohnt es sich die c’t zu kaufen bzw. den stundenlangen Download zu starten? Kannst du sagen, in welcher Version (Ver 0.90) die Fonts vorliegen?

Die CD liegt im Laufwerk, und ich habe neben ein paar HTML-Dateien eine 465MB große exe-Datei vor mir. Ich weiß allerdings nicht, ob ich das wirklich installieren will, da davor gewarnt wird, dass die alte Office-Installation dabei draufgehen kann.

Ich liebe systemnahe Installationen... Warum nicht vernünftig, warum immer alles ineinandergeschachtelt? Vielleicht sollte ich installieren, und wenn es nicht klappt, die Schriften sichern, Office von der Platte werfen, und endgültig auf OpenOffice.org umsteigen...

So:

exe-Datei mit 7zip entpackt (dürfte auch mit anderen Programmen gehen).

Aus dem Material die Datei ProWW.cab herausgefischt (260mb) und diese auch entpackt.

Darin sind dann die Schriften enthalten:

- Das C-Sextett: V0.95 (also unverändert)

- SegoeUI: V0.97
