Skolar is a seriffed typeface which has been designed specifically for scholarly multilingual publications. However, it can be successfully used for any rather formal purpose. Prominent serifs and low-contrast modulation give the typeface a fairly robust character.

Relatively large x-height sets the typeface proportions somewhere between book and newspaper typefaces. The capitals are rather low in comparison to the ascenders to give the typeface even texture and more space for capital diacritical marks. These characteristics were introduced to improve readability in smaller sizes.

The Skolar family includes a complex set of smart arrows which can be combined in infinite ways using OpenType features. Arrows and bullets are consistent throughout all variants. Skolar maintains its credibility while enjoying a subtle personal style as well. The structure of the typeface is strictly conventional, but the stroke modulation reflects the style of contemporary seriffed typefaces.

The italic has a shallow angle and large counters for better readability. It is easily recognized but not ostentatious; it blends well with the regular. The italic figures are mostly designed without serifs to distinguish them from their regular counterparts.

Skolar has already received international recognition at the ed-Awards competition 2008 and was selected as one of the best typefaces of 2008 by i love typography.

Gefällt mir, aber für wirklich akademischen Gebrauch fehlen griechische Buchstaben. Naturwissenschaftler brauchen da ja nur die Standardzeichen, für diverse Altphilologen braucht man auch noch Codepages wie Greek Extended usw.

Mir gefällt sie echt gut, gerade das etwas «Rauhere» daran. Warum sie gerade auf wissenschaftliche Arbeiten zugeschnitten sein soll, sehe ich persönlich allerdings nicht so ganz – auf mich wirkt sie weicher/wärmer/freundlicher, als ich mir eine Textschrift für Wissenschaft vorgestellt hätte (das «g» ist ja schon richtig knuffig). Aber vielleicht ist das ja die Idee?

Jedenfalls: die Tintenfalle am A ist echt scharf.

Ich entdecke die Ästhetik der Tintenfallen erst allmählich (und bin immer sehr hinundhergerissen). Die Olga gefällt mir inzwischen richtig gut. Bei der Opal bin ich mir noch nicht ganz sicher – frag mich in nem halben Jahr nochmal :wink:

Hatte keine Ahnung, dass man diese Einkerbungen »Tintenfalle« nennt. Wie kam sowas ursprünglich zustande? (Ich nehme mal an es kommt vom Schreiben mit der Breitfeder)
