Wladimir Andrich entwickelte die Cremona ursprünglich für den Fotosatz-Anbieter Alphatype Corporation. Nachdem Berthold das Unternehmen Anfang der 1980er-Jahre übernahm, blieb die Schrift im Programm der H. Berthold AG. Eine digitale Version mit erweiterter lateinischer Belegung und Kapitälchen ist heute über Monotype verfügbar.
